Tea cultivation has only begun in the Ali San area of southern Taiwan in recent decades. Before that, deforestation covered the high mountains in the area. Now, the picturesque mountains produce excellent balled-style oolong teas, similar to those from southern Fujian Province. Dong Ding is one of the original oolongs, produced in the mountains in the middle of Taiwan. Tea makers have cultivated Dong Ding around the town of Luku in the foothills of Taiwan's central mountain range since the mid-1800s. They followed their cousins' production methods in southern Fujian Province and roll the large tea leaves into a ball. This is one we have sourced over the years, and it is a lightly roasted oolong with pleasant lemon and vegetal flavors. This year, we visited Mr. Shen and enjoyed the 2024 production.

This tea is made in Northern Taiwan and is twisted (as opposed to the balled style). It is harvested around June, which is later than other oolongs. The growers allow a leaf hopper (Jacobiasca formosana) to attack the tea leaves. The plants release a compound in self-defense that we find deliciously similar in flavor to peaches. Mike saw the plants on the defensive on a trip to Taiwan; he found it fascinating to observe this remarkable botanical process.

Fenghuang Shuixian, a delicious and rare oolong tea, is widely regarded for its dark peach and spice flavor. A high point of Mike's trips to China is visiting the artisans high above the city of Chaozhou. He enjoys seeing how they transform the big leaves into twists of brown oolong with hints of russet. Nimbu is Hindi for "lemon," and that, together with caramel flavor, is what we added to a fine Darjeeling to get this wonderful tea. Light and delicious, it features a citrus aroma and is slightly sweet.

Emeric visited the Otsuka family in the spring of 2023. The Otsuka family has been making tea in the coastal region of Kakegawa for almost 150 years. This Ichiban is their pride, made from the tea fields that surround their factory. The area is so dominated by tea that one hill has a tea bush topiary trimmed to the shape of the Japanese character for "tea." Ichiban is harvested on the first days of production in late April. It is made at an old, traditional factory and then finished at their plant. Compared to the polished and almost pastoral quality of Matsuda's Sencha, this Ichiban has the punch and intensity of Tokyo's rush hour.

Ti Quan Yin Spring Floral is delicious and a great value. We searched through all of Anxi to find a Chinese oolong tea that captures the high floral notes, has a nice body, and isn't too expensive. Its tiny greenish balls can be re-brewed several times.

This is a lovely tea made by the Cheng family, which has been making Pouchongs for over 100 years. Visiting this tea's hometown is the highlight of any trip to Taiwan. PingLing is a true tea town, with tea restaurants, a tea museum, statues of hardworking pluckers, and even streetlights that resemble teapots. Ceylon Vintage Silver Tips is a rare white tea with a flavor that's light, sweet, and sublime. A Harney & Sons exclusive, this tea is plucked and made just for us from the terminal buds of tea bushes grown high in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). They are handled with great care, so the bud remains whole and becomes silvery. Since there are no leaves, the flavor is different from traditional tea.

Kagoshima is the southernmost part of the island of Kyushu, Japan. Spring “springs” earlier in Kagoshima than in the northern tea regions. The first fresh teas come from this area. This is an early-season tea, so it has high levels of amino acids, giving it a good body for a Sencha. The tea fields have been flattened and straightened so that large tractors may be used to harvest the tea. Sometimes quantity is more important than quality in teas from Kyushu. Our friend Tsuyoshi looks for the best teas from the region. Asatsuyu tea is included in this blend, which is called a natural Gyokuro because of its mellow sweetness.

Matcha is a much beloved green tea in Japan, yet it can seem intense to the uninitiated westerner. As an alternative, we suggest Matcha iri Genmaicha, the best of both worlds. The Bancha ("cha") leaves and brown rice ("genmai") that comprise Genmaicha are coated with Matcha green tea powder, and the result is fantastic! Please brew it for 3 minutes with 175º water. The cooler water makes sure matcha does not get too strong, yet you need 3 minutes to get the nutty flavor from the genmai (brown rice).  Make sure to check out all our Matcha teas!

Powdered green teas have been consumed in China and Japan for centuries. However it is only in the last few decades that Westerners have acquired a taste for this ancient tea. We enjoy the bracing vegetal flavors, as well as the unusual process for preparing the tea. Jobetsugi is a "thin matcha", so it is a bit lighter in body than our Senjunomukashi, but still it is strong and bracing. Aesthetically pleasing, fragrant, and full of exquisite flavors, this tea is a classic Keemun Mao Feng. An early-season tea from the Keemun gardens in Anhui Province, China, the delicately thin and twisted strips of black tea and russet produce beautiful dark cocoa aromas when infused. Kenilworth is one of the oldest tea estates in Sri Lanka. Halfway up the Central Highlands, Kenilworth is considered a "medium grown" tea, so the weather there is moderate—not as hot as down in the plains, but not cool like in the peaks. Kenilworth is in the western tea area, known as "Dimbula." This estate is always a joy to visit. Unlike most tea estates, this one is neat and tidy. All of this helps to explain why the estate makes excellent full-leaf tea that is wonderfully mellow.

Organic Sencha is the real deal. We were happy to find a nice-tasting green tea that was truly organic and truly a Sencha. We are big fans of Matsuda and his Sencha, and when we learned that this tea was from Watsuka, we were very excited. Organic teas are very important to some; however, sometimes it is hard to find these teas in Japan. The tea makers often feel that they cannot make good tea without the addition of nitrogen. This element is found in every amino acid, even those in your body. Amino acids give Sencha their body, or umami, and they also add sweetness to the brew. However, this teamaker gets by with natural fertilizers. Yes, the tea is a bit weaker than other Senchas, but it is still very nice.

By then, they had mostly shifted to black teas from Assam, India, and Ceylon. The blend also includes Formosa Oolong, which was popularized in both the UK and the US by an enterprising Brit. This blend would have been recognizable to tea lovers of that era. A hand-rolled style of one of China's best green teas. This spring, we visited the lakeside village that makes this special tea. It was great to see the ladies hand-roll the large leaves before they were flattened out in a press. Most Taiping Houkui is now made by machine, so it is nice to have this hand-rolled traditional green tea. Please note: There is only one ounce per unit. We put it in a large bag to make sure the large leaves remain full. Directions: Please put 2-3 grams (10–15 large leaves) in a heat-resistant glass or teapot, add 175º hot water, and steep for 3–4 minutes.

Mike visited this lovely estate located high above the small town of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. This area is among the highest areas to grow tea, and the weather is constantly changing. Sometimes sunny, but often cloudy or rainy. This makes for beautiful and lush tea plants. It does not have as distinct a growing season as the areas to the west (Dimbula) or the east (Uva). Who would equate Colombia and tea? Most wouldn't. However, we do have the advantage of having Elvira Cardenas as a tea taster, and she is a terrific one. So, when she said someone in her country made delicious tea, we gave it a try. The company is called Himalaya because it is located in the mountains of Colombia, in the town of La Cumbre, and respects tea traditions. We chose black and green tea. They are both quite tasty and worth a try.

About 30 years ago, friend and colleague Andrew Demmer decided to mix dried fruit and flavors together for his tea shops in Vienna, Austria. These blends were not from the tea plant, were caffeine-free, and were refreshingly delicious. Andrew decided to call them fruit teas. Earl Grey is a very popular tea here at Harney & Sons, so we offer many variations. They all have one thing in common: the wonderful lemony aromas and flavors that come from our oil of bergamot. It is the base that makes them different. Winter White uses Mutan White, making it lighter than traditional black teas. Heavenly Gyokuro is hand-picked just outside of Uji, Japan. Our friend Tsuyoshi uses tea from the Ujitawara and Kyotanbe mountains. This area of central Japan is known to have the best shade-grown Gyokuro. The plants gradually receive cover towards the end of the growing season. This stress forces the plant to react by adding more green-appearing chlorophyll. The combination of mouth-filling umami and a very distinctive spinach-like aroma is what makes this tea heavenly. Uji, located 30 minutes south of Kyoto, is the primary location for growing Gyokuro. To meet the demands of the Emperor and other members of the aristocracy, there were large tea fields and many tea factories built around Kyoto. The twilight of the Edo era saw the commercialization of shade-grown teas.

Few places can boast as rich a crop of tea as China's Wuyi Mountains. From these famous tea fields comes this Da Hong Pao, or "Big Red Robe." The descendants of the three famous tea plants produce this wonderful oolong tea, their large, unbroken leaves roughly 40% oxidized for a warm and rich flavor. On the palate, notes of peach compote and dark molasses persist, with each steep producing a slightly different evolution of flavor.

This tea is from an hour south of Hangzhou in the mountains of Tong Lu, which we have visited twice. There, the tea comes from the White Leaf #1 plant, like in Anji. In Tong Lu, they make a different style of tea, but it is just as wonderful as Anji Baicha.

The island of Jeju (Cheju-do) is located south of mainland South Korea. The island, primarily popular with tourists, is centered around a large volcano and a National Park. Four different gardens offer vast and beautiful fields of green tea, sloping up to meet the peak. This Korean tea bears a resemblance to Japanese Sencha due to its gentle shading and steaming during processing. Overall, this tea has a beautiful, curly leaf, an aromatic bouquet, and a smooth cup. We are proud to offer our very first South Korean tea.

A few years ago, on our annual trip to China, we came upon a new tea garden in southern Zhejiang Province where veteran tea growers coaxed the famous Anji tea plants to bear fruit of unparalleled flavors. Today, those plants produce delicious green and black teas, including Tong Lu Black. Lightly malty and carrying faint hints of tropical fruit and natural sweetness, Tong Lu Black pairs brilliantly as a dessert tea or stands as a superb refresher on its own. It was a pleasure to see Mr. Yu during our recent trip (2024) to China. He makes this black tea from the Jokuen tea plant. We love the fruity flavors!
